Ed Vaizey Brillo’d Over Brexit Budget

Pro-Remain minister Ed Vaizey repeatedly dodged Brillo’s question about which, if any, economists think Osborne’s tax-hiking spending-slashing post-Brexit budget would work. Accused of “filibustering” to avoid an answer, Vaizey then launched a bizarre attack on the Remain backing IMF’s economic credibility:

“You know full well over the last six years when George took decisions about cutting spending and raising taxes organisations like the IMF told him he was playing with fire”

At times Vaizey was literally laughing at the less than credible lines he was sent out to spin…

Corbyn Will Block Osborne’s Dead Cat Budget

“We would oppose any post-Brexit austerity budget, just as we have opposed any austerity budget proposed by this government.” It ain’t gonna happen…

Guardian Editorial Condemns Rivals’ Tax Affairs

guardian

Today’s Guardian editorial says vote Remain because the newspapers backing Brexit are owned by tax avoiders. Yes, really.

“Questions also need to be asked about what lies behind the flag-waving certainties that are currently being served up by so much of Fleet Street. Imperfect as it may be, Europe-wide cooperation is the best hope we have on tax avoidance. And the typical tax-paying patriot may wonder whether they are on the same side on that question as the non-domiciled Lord Rothermere, who owns the Mail, or the Barclay Brothers, who own the Telegraph and have major interests in the Channel Islands and a Monaco address.”

“The typical tax-paying patriot?”

Readers don’t need reminding about the Guardian’s own offshore secrets, the assets held in the Caymans, the Scott Trust tax dodge. The lack of self-awareness is stunning…

Osborne: No Further Offer on Free Movement

At last something truthful from the Chancellor: Osborne admits Remain cannot offer any reform of free movement.

Today: “The Guardian is reporting this morning that Downing Street is considering whether there could be anything more to offer in terms of perhaps controls on freedom of movement that would reassure voters who were worried about the open door to this country for EU citizens. Is there?”

Osborne: “The short answer is no.”

That shoots down Watson, Balls and Cooper…

50 Signatures Secured in an Hour

Guido understands it took Vote Leave little more than an hour to secure 50 signatures of Tory MPs who would vote down Osborne’s empty threat budget:

Iain Duncan Smith, Liam Fox, Cheryl Gillan, David Jones, Owen Paterson, John Redwood, Sir Gerald Howarth, Tim Loughton, Crispin Blunt, Sir William Cash, Bernard Jenkin, Julian Lewis, Adam Afriyie, Nigel Adams, Lucy Allan, Steve Baker, Bob Blackman, Peter Bone, Andrew Bridgen, David Burrowes, Maria Caulfield, Christopher Chope, Chris Davies, Philip Davies, David TC Davies, Nadine Dorries, Steve Double, Richard Drax, Nigel Evans, Michael Fabricant, Marcus Fysh, Chris Green, Rebecca Harris, Gordon Henderson, Philip Hollobone, Adam Holloway, Kwasi Kwarteng, Jonathan Lord, Craig Mackinlay, Anne Main, Karl McCartney, Nigel Mills, Anne Marie Morris, Sheryl Murray, David Nuttall, Matthew Offord, Andrew Percy, Tom Pursglove, Jacob Rees-Mogg, Andrew Rosindell, Henry Smith, Derek Thomas, Anne Marie Trevelyan, Martin Vickers, David Warburton, Bill Wiggin, William Wragg

Little more than an hour to get 50 Tory MPs to sign a letter vowing to bring down the government. Osborne tells Today he’d rely on Labour votes to pass the budget – that is laughable. Cameron and Osborne won’t be preparing an emergency budget if we vote to Leave, they’ll be calling the removal van…

UPDATE: Number is up to 57 Tory MPs plus Douglas Carswell. Taking it to 58 MPs before we even get to the SNP and Labour…

Labour Remainers Split Down the Middle

SPLIT

Dave’s decision to stand back and let Labour take charge of the Remain campaign is going well then. The party has split down the middle in the space of 48 hours.

Labour Remainers who want to keep free movement:

Jeremy Corbyn: Will fight to defend free movement.

John McDonnell: Told Peston he is against controls.

Ed Miliband: Problems shouldn’t be blamed on immigration.

Gordon Brown: Immigration is the BBC’s agenda.

Hilary Benn: Free movement is “part of the deal”.

Chuka Umunna: Happy with renegotiation on free movement.

Caroline Flint: Restrictions will hit Britons travelling to EU.

Chi Onwurah: Does not agree with Ed Balls.

Labour Remainers who want free movement reformed:

Tom Watson: Free movement rules must end.

Ed Balls: EU must impose new controls.

Yvette Cooper: Also says new controls needed.

Andy Burnham: Immigration key factor for Brexit voters.

Tristram Hunt: Wants UK to get grip on EU migrants.

Anna Turley: We have to look at freedom of movement.

Michael Dugher: Talking about immigration better late than never.

Those calling for reform want Brussels to suddenly tear up the main principle of the European project – it will never happen – as Stephen Bush says they might as well back Brexit. Yesterday morning Tom Watson tweeted: “The whole Labour family together today with a single, simple message.” Didn’t last long…

Osborne Drops Schrödinger’s Dead Cat

OSBORNE-DEAD-CAT

Osborne is finally dropping the Remainers’ dead cat – which was expected by many next week – the idea is it is so visceral, so extreme, the papers will talk about little else. It may well work on the broadsheets, they may well talk about little else. The Times leads on his dire warnings:

  • 2p added to the 20p basic rate of income tax
  • 3p added to the 40p higher rate of income tax
  • 5p on the rate of inheritance tax, taking it from 40p to 45p
  • A 5% jump in fuel and alcohol duties
  • £2 billion cut from the pensions bill
  • 2% cuts to the “protected” NHS, schools and defence budgets
  • 5% cuts in budgets like policing, transport and councils

This is the Remainers’ ultimate “Project Fear” gambit, a quantum politics derived nuclear bomb – the Anti-Vow – whereas the Scottish Referendum’s Solemn Vow promised milk and honey, the Brexit Anti-Vow is for hell and damnation. Alongside Alistair Darling, George Osborne will swear the political establishment’s fiscal pain vow on a scale not seen even in Greece. All because we voted to change our trading arrangements over a 2 year negotiation after implementing Article 50 of the EU Treaty. Only one gigantic logical flaw. Following a Brexit vote he won’t be Chancellor and there would never be a majority in parliament for this even if he were. This is the political equivalent of Schrödinger’s dead cat. When we open the Brexit box it won’t even be there…

Chuka Calls Ken “Pathetic”, Ken Calls Chuka “Wriggling”

Red on red during today’s Home Affairs Select Committee anti-Semitism inquiry as a furious Chuka called Ken “pathetic”: Ken: “What I said was true. What caused offence was a group of embittered old Blairite MPs running around lying about what I said -“ Chuka: “It’s just pathetic” Ken: “Yes, yes, there’s no good you wriggling away Chuka Umunna, […]

Quote of the Day

Brendan O’Neill on the coverage of Jo Cox’s murder:

“I don’t have very high expectations of the British media. But even I am shocked at the speed with which sections of it have sought to make political mileage from Jo Cox’s death. Pro-Remain journalists, swathes of the broadsheet set, are already discussing her death as a consequence of Brexit campaigning, as a foul spin-off of foul politics. They’re saying that of course Brexiteers aren’t directly responsible, but… that wretched “but”, which means “but they are responsible”. Remainers are already pointing a collective finger at the “political climate” cultivated by Brexit and suggesting it nurtured this murder. I thought they would wait, a day perhaps, before marshalling this tragedy to their cause. But no.

Politically exploiting a murder, morally blackmailing Brexiteers to tone down their campaign, and inadvertently diminishing the culpability of the killer by suggesting “the climate” bears some responsibility for what he did — I think it’s possible the British media has just reached a new low, the lowest low.”
