Computer Says No at Telegraph

tele

Missed your fill of Telegraph stories about men with two penises recently? As part of its ‘digital first’ focus the paper has implemented a disastrous new Content Management System, which fell over on six separate days in the last two weeks. The new “AEM Authoring” system, the baby of zany Digital Director Malcolm Coles, has required “emergency” work because news stories could not be uploaded to the site. Then came a further hiccup: “Editorial are currently experiencing delays when publishing content”. Journalists complained that their copy was unable to be published on June 3, 4, 7, 8, 10 and 11. On Saturday another problem arose: “Editorial are unable to create new articles”To be fair that could be down to the CMS, or it could be because they’ve fired half their writers…

Action Dan’s Wealth Tax Plan

Dan Jarvis has written a supportive foreword for a Fabian pamphlet backing a “one off” wealth tax aimed at the rich. The pamphlet attacks hedge funds for their high rates of return available only to rich investors. The left-wing authors have found a new pot of gold to replace the middle-class terrifying mansion tax – which was basically a tax on homeowners in the South East where family homes easily exceed £2 million. The Tories mail-shotted the hell out of the issue to homeowners in the general election…

The evil Fabians’ plan is to levy the one-off tax on those with assets over £10 million or who use “aggressive tax avoidance”. Those with over £20 million in assets will suffer an even bigger expropriation of their wealth. The authors of this plan think this will avoid losing votes as it will hit only the 0.1%. Only the likes of Guido apparently think the super-rich have suffered enough…

The problems with the idea – apart from the immorality of confiscating justly acquired wealth arbitrarily – are manifest and obvious. The type of people who use aggressive tax avoidance strategies (a) don’t admit they do, (b) won’t stay around to see themselves financially gouged. The idea that people who go to the trouble of parking their money offshore will have a change of heart is laughably naive. It will also hit entrepreneurs who build successful companies which bring jobs and taxes to Britain. Why would an entrepreneur choose to base herself in a country that punishes her success?

Why is Jarvis aligning himself with such a crazy, job-destroying, entrepreneur-deterring, unworkable left-wing policy? Could it be he wants to be able to defend himself with a policy shield in a leadership contest when the subject of his donations from hedge-fund tycoons comes up?

Tyrie: Government Job Would be “Greatest Honour”

TYRIE

As expected Andrew Tyrie came out for Remain today with a speech at the Centre for Policy Studies. Equally unsurprisingly, Tyrie told the room he was open to a government job in the future:

“I’ve always said it would be the greatest honour to serve in any government.”

Asked if Nadine Dorries was right that he’d been offered a “sniff of Osborne’s dirty socks”, he replied: “David Cameron’s never offered me anything. I’m not aware that he is going to me anything”. Yet…

The long-term Europhile said he was “disappointed by the EU negotiations, I felt we could have asked for more”. Tyrie has condemned both the Leave and Remain campaigns for misleading figures. What was it that made him reserve stronger criticism for Leave today?

Peak Project Fear: Brexit Will Cause Destruction of Western Civilisation

tusk

Forget World War 3. Forget pensions. Donald Tusk has trumped the lot with this piece of fear-mongering to end all fear-mongering:

“As a historian I fear that Brexit could be the beginning of the destruction of not only the EU but also of western political civilization in its entirety.”

Has he been drinking with Juncker?

UPDATE: Priti Patel says:

“This is extraordinary language from the EU president, and serves only to reveal his own desperation. The only thing that is destroying civilizations is the Euro – which has ruined economies and led to youth unemployment soaring to nearly 50% in southern Europe.”

Burnham Comes Last in Two Manchester Hustings

burnham manchester

Scouser Andy Burnham running for Manchester mayor was always an odd one. The Everton fan’s Twitter stream is full of opposition from local Mancs who would rather have Stretford boy Tony Lloyd in the job. So it’s not surprising that Burnham’s campaign has bombed – he came last in the Co-Op Party hustings last week, and came last again in the Gorton CLP hustings last night. Lloyd won both by a landslide. Maybe Andy’s just too Westminster bubble…

SPANISH FLEE: Remain’s Messina Off to Madrid

MESSINA

Remain’s “senior strategic advisor” Jim Messina has learned from David Axelrod how to fly in for a couple of days, shake a few hands, send a couple of tweets and then jet off having trousered a thick wedge. With ten days to go Messina is forgetting about the referendum – he has just been hired by Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to help with his election strategy. According to the Spanish press Messina begins work immediately:

“He will combine working for Rajoy with other work such as assisting Cameron in the campaign against Brexit, though his involvement will be higher in Spain. Messina is responsible for online communication.”

The last sighting of Messina in London was at a crisis meeting with BSE on May 31 as the polls started to turn. How much are they paying him to jump from the sinking ship?

READ: Turkey Cables in Full

These are the leaked diplomatic cables referenced by the Sunday Times which show British diplomats discussing plans to allow visa-free access to the UK for over a million Turks. The key sections are highlighted, for example this bombshell paragraph which argues Britain should “assess again the possibility of visa travel”. Remember, Cameron publicly said “we won’t be offering visa-free […]

LEAKED CABLES: 1.8 Million Migrants Would Be “A Drop in the Ocean” Compared to Turkey

The Sunday Times has a great scoop: leaked cables reveal UK diplomats have discussed visa liberalisation for Turks coming to Britain, despite David Cameron’s pledge that “we won’t be offering visa-free access to Turks”. And there’s more… Guido has been passed the cache of diplomatic cables. The telegram below is marked “Official – sensitive” and was sent by […]

Quote of the Day

Brendan O’Neill on the coverage of Jo Cox’s murder:

“I don’t have very high expectations of the British media. But even I am shocked at the speed with which sections of it have sought to make political mileage from Jo Cox’s death. Pro-Remain journalists, swathes of the broadsheet set, are already discussing her death as a consequence of Brexit campaigning, as a foul spin-off of foul politics. They’re saying that of course Brexiteers aren’t directly responsible, but… that wretched “but”, which means “but they are responsible”. Remainers are already pointing a collective finger at the “political climate” cultivated by Brexit and suggesting it nurtured this murder. I thought they would wait, a day perhaps, before marshalling this tragedy to their cause. But no.

Politically exploiting a murder, morally blackmailing Brexiteers to tone down their campaign, and inadvertently diminishing the culpability of the killer by suggesting “the climate” bears some responsibility for what he did — I think it’s possible the British media has just reached a new low, the lowest low.”
